Influenza season is getting under way here in Ontario County. Are you ready? Our best protection against becoming sick with the flu is vaccination.
The effectiveness of flu vaccine depends on the age and health of the vaccinated person and the types of flu that are circulating during a particular season. Though vaccine generally does a good job in young, healthy adults and older children, it is less effective in people over the age of 65. Most flu-related deaths occur in this age group. It is very important for younger people who have contact with senior citizens to receive flu vaccine. No one wants to give Grandma and Grandpa the flu!
There is no flu vaccine available for babies under the age of six months.Families and friends must create a "ring of vaccination" around these little ones to insure they do not expose them to influenza.
Vaccination is important but it is not 100% effective. Other flu prevention strategies include frequent hand-washing with plenty of soap and water; covering coughs and sneezes; and staying home when you are sick.
