When I was six, I remember riding between my parents in the front seat of the rambler, my older siblings in the back. I asked mom why only married ladies had babies. I heard my sisters gasp and giggle behind me. Mom calmly lied, "God only sends babies to ladies who are married." I had a loving, smart mom but she missed this great opportunity to provide her children with some simple messages about relationships and sex. I hope things are different now, but I’m not so sure they are.
Do you talk to your kids about relationships? About sex? Do you use every day teachable moments when they come up? Are you clear in your own mind about your expectations for your children and about what you want them to know before their hormones arrive?
On March 1, 2016, the Finger Lakes Sexual Health Coalition will begin its initiative, The Sex Drive - tips for having chats with your kids about their bodies, relationships and sex when you are in the car together. Check out their Facebook page for weekly tips and conversation starters.
Your kids are learning about sex; let it be from you.
