1. When is the Department of Human Resources open?

The department is open Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. The Civil Service application, study guides and exam announcements are available on this website 24/7.

2. What will be on the test?

You can find out what areas each test will cover from the exam announcement under the heading "Scope of Examination." Announcements are posted approximately four weeks prior to the closing date for filing an application. Exam announcements are available in the Ontario County Department of Human Resources or on this web site.

3. Can an exception be made for an application deadline?

No. When applying for an exam, take note of the closing date for filing. Applications must be postmarked or in the possession of Civil Service by the closing date for the exam. No exceptions will be made.

4. What if I have moved since taking the test?

If you have moved and have applied for a Civil Service Exam or have recently taken an exam and are awaiting results, please complete the "Address Change Form" and return it to the Department of Human Resources. The Post Office will not automatically forward our mail. Address Change Form

5. When will I receive my exam results?

Test results typically take two to three months to receive back from New York State Civil Service. You will be notified by mail of your test score and your ranking on the eligible list for that title. An eligible list is a ranked listing of all passing candidates from a Civil Service exam.

6. How do I find out when Civil Service Exams are scheduled?

The best way to be notified about a civil service exam is to subscribe to "Notify Me" on the Human Resources website. When exams are announced, you will be sent an e-mail notification of the exam title and a link to the exam announcement on our website.
